This 1967 Soviet poster, titled “À l’appel de la patrie…” (“At the call of the Motherland…”), is a striking example of late Soviet graphic design, combining a reduced visual language with a powerful message of duty and readiness.

The composition is dominated by the large, stylized figure of a soldier rendered in deep blue tones. His face is calm and focused, his expression controlled, embodying discipline and resolve. His raised hand in salute cuts diagonally across the image, creating a strong structural line that organizes the composition and reinforces the gesture of allegiance.

Behind him, three tanks move forward in formation across a simplified landscape. Their repetition suggests collective strength and coordinated power, while their reduced scale places emphasis on the human figure as the central symbol of commitment. The soldier is not portrayed as an individual, but as an archetype—representing the ideal Soviet defender.

The color palette is deliberately restrained, built around green, blue, and red. This limited range enhances the poster’s visual clarity and gives it a modern, almost graphic quality. Unlike earlier, more detailed Socialist Realist works, this poster reflects the stylistic evolution of the 1960s toward simplification, bold contrasts, and immediate readability.

The slogan, placed prominently in the upper left, reads: “По первому зову Родины…”—“At the first call of the Motherland…”. The phrase remains intentionally open-ended, implying instant readiness and unquestioned response. It conveys a sense of vigilance and reinforces the expectation of immediate action in defense of the state.

Today, this poster stands out for its clean composition and strong visual impact. Its balance between abstraction and symbolism makes it both a compelling historical document of the Cold War era and a highly decorative piece of mid-20th-century graphic art.
