This compelling 1976 Soviet poster by S. Raev, titled “Soyouz – Apollo, au nom de la paix et du progrès”, commemorates one of the most symbolic moments of the Cold War: the joint Apollo–Soyuz Test Project of July 1975, the first international human spaceflight mission.

The composition is dominated by a large five-pointed star set against a deep cosmic background. Within the star appear portraits of key figures associated with the mission—Soviet cosmonauts and American astronauts—alongside a central depiction of the docked spacecraft. This arrangement transforms the star, a traditional Soviet emblem, into a symbol of international cooperation.

Below, the Earth is shown from space, partially illuminated, with a delicate orbital trajectory linking it to the spacecraft above. This visual connection emphasizes unity across borders and the shared destiny of humanity in space exploration.

The inscription at the bottom, “Во имя мира и прогресса” (“In the name of peace and progress”), encapsulates the poster’s message. At the top, a quotation attributed to Leonid Brezhnev highlights the importance of détente and scientific collaboration between nations, reflecting the political climate of the mid-1970s.

Stylistically, the poster blends realism and graphic symbolism. The cool blue palette evokes the vastness of space, while the structured composition and clean lines reflect the precision and optimism associated with technological achievement. The integration of portraiture within a symbolic form demonstrates a sophisticated approach to visual storytelling typical of late Soviet design.

Created in the aftermath of the Apollo–Soyuz mission, the poster serves both as commemoration and as ideological statement, presenting space exploration as a pathway toward peaceful coexistence and global progress.

Today, “Soyouz – Apollo, au nom de la paix et du progrès” is valued as a significant artifact of space history and Cold War culture, capturing a rare moment of collaboration between superpowers through striking and elegant graphic design.
