This impressive original chromolithograph portrays His Highness Mohamed Tewfik Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, a central political figure of the late 19th century. Tewfik Pasha reigned from 1879 to 1892, succeeding his father Ismail Pasha at a time of deep political transformation, financial crisis, and increasing European intervention in Egypt. Depicted in full ceremonial dress, richly embroidered with gold and adorned with medals and decorations, he embodies the image of dynastic authority and Ottoman–Egyptian aristocratic grandeur. The vivid colouring and meticulous attention to detail underscore his status and the dignity expected of Egypt’s ruler.

Printed in Cairo by Friedmann Leib, a known printing establishment of the period, the portrait reflects the sophisticated development of print culture in Egypt at the end of the 19th century. Chromolithography allowed for richly coloured, highly finished images to circulate widely, functioning both as political representation and visual affirmation of power. The red fez, formal sash, and military-style uniform connect Tewfik to both Ottoman tradition and the modern state he governed.

Beyond its striking visual quality, this poster stands as a valuable historical document. It encapsulates an era when Egypt stood at a crossroads between Ottoman heritage, British influence, and emerging national identity. Today, it is appreciated not only as an elegant example of period portrait lithography, but as a tangible reminder of a pivotal moment in Egyptian history.
