This striking original lithograph by Pierre Soulages was published in 1959 as part of the celebrated art review XXème Siècle—a cornerstone of post-war European art publishing. Printed by the legendary Ateliers Mourlot in Paris, this edition of 2000 captures the essence of Soulages' early explorations into light, density, and contrast through his signature use of black.

Soulages, known as the “painter of black,” transforms the void into form here. Bold, gestural strokes of deep black ink dominate the composition, layered over light cream paper. The marks appear both spontaneous and deliberate—brutal yet harmonious. The interplay of texture and shadow gives the work an almost sculptural presence.

Published in the pages of XXème Siècle, one of the most influential avant-garde periodicals of the time, this print is an authentic period lithograph, not a reproduction, and was created from an original plate under Soulages’ supervision.

This work stands as a key example of postwar abstraction, part of a moment when Soulages was gaining international recognition. It also reflects the deep dialogue between artist and printer at Mourlot, where many of the 20th century’s most iconic prints were born.

A museum-quality piece, ideal for collectors of Modernist printmaking, French abstraction, or admirers of Soulages’ monumental contribution to the language of non-figurative art.
