This original 1962 lithograph, Nature morte à la pipe #2, is based on a composition by Pablo Picasso and reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with still-life subjects interpreted through a modernist visual language. Produced in a limited edition of 260 impressions (this example numbered 198/260), the print was realised under the direction of Gilberte de Jouvenel and printed by Mourlot Frères at the workshops of Daniel Jacomet, both renowned collaborators in twentieth-century fine art lithography.

The composition presents a stylised still life combining everyday objects — including a pipe — with abstracted forms and flattened perspective. Characteristic of Picasso’s mature graphic work, the image balances playful distortion with controlled line work and subtle colour fields, creating a poetic reinterpretation of traditional still-life imagery through a modernist lens.

Mourlot’s Paris atelier was instrumental in translating many major modern artists’ works into lithographic editions, ensuring exceptional print quality while preserving the spontaneity of the original drawing. Editions such as this allowed Picasso’s imagery to reach a broader audience while maintaining collectable artistic value.

Today, this lithograph stands as a refined example of post-war modern printmaking — combining Picasso’s inventive visual vocabulary with the technical excellence of one of the twentieth century’s most prestigious printing workshops.
