This remarkable 1847 lithograph depicting Medinet Abou at Thebes is based on the work of the celebrated Scottish artist and traveler David Roberts and was lithographed by the master printmaker Louis Haghe. The print belongs to the monumental publication The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, one of the most famous illustrated travel works of the nineteenth century.
Roberts traveled extensively throughout the Middle East and Egypt between 1838 and 1840, documenting the region’s ancient monuments with extraordinary accuracy and artistic sensitivity. His drawings captured the fascination that European audiences had with the ruins of ancient civilizations during the height of nineteenth-century Orientalism.
The scene represented here shows the interior ruins of the temple complex of Medinet Habu, located near the ancient city of Thebes. Massive stone columns and fallen architectural fragments fill the temple courtyard, conveying both the monumental scale of the structure and the passage of time. Small human figures resting among the ruins provide a sense of scale and quiet contemplation, emphasizing the grandeur of the ancient site.
Louis Haghe, one of the most accomplished lithographers of the Victorian era, translated Roberts’ detailed drawings into lithographic prints of exceptional precision and subtle tonal quality. His work allowed the original watercolors and sketches to be reproduced faithfully, preserving the delicate lighting effects and architectural detail that characterize Roberts’ vision.
These prints played a significant role in shaping nineteenth-century European perceptions of Egypt. At a time when photography was still in its infancy, Roberts’ lithographs offered many viewers their first visual encounter with the monumental temples and archaeological wonders of the Nile Valley.
Mounted on cardboard, as was common for many surviving examples, this lithograph remains both a work of art and an important historical document. Today, prints from Roberts’ celebrated series are prized by collectors for their artistic quality and their role in documenting the rediscovery of ancient Egypt during the nineteenth century.
