La chaine du Mont Blanc vue de la Flegère ( 1806m ) Circa 1885

Dating from circa 1885, this original panoramic print presents the Mont Blanc range as seen from La Flégère, the celebrated viewpoint above the Chamonix valley. Its remarkably wide format recreates the experience of surveying the Alpine horizon, while the printed title records the historical elevation of the viewpoint as 1,806 metres.

The composition extends across a succession of rocky slopes, wooded ridges, glaciers and sharply defined summits. A small mountain building in the foreground establishes the observer’s position, while the monumental landscape unfolds beyond it. Fine monochrome linework gives the scene both atmospheric depth and an almost scientific precision.

Individual peaks and geographical features are identified along the upper and lower margins. These annotations transform the image from a purely decorative landscape into a practical visual guide, allowing nineteenth-century travellers to recognise the mountains and glaciers visible from La Flégère.

During the second half of the nineteenth century, Chamonix became an increasingly important destination for artists, naturalists, mountaineers and international visitors. Panoramic views such as this accompanied the growth of Alpine tourism, combining topographical information with the period’s fascination for dramatic and seemingly untouched mountain scenery.
