Created in 1984, Balloons is an original poster by the celebrated French graphic artist Razzia. Its discreet inscription, “An Air Fleet Corporation Since 1783,” playfully recalls the pioneering balloon flights of 1783 and connects this modern composition with the beginnings of human aviation.
A monumental cream-colored balloon fills the deep cobalt-blue sky, its symmetrical form defined by a delicate network of lines. Gold lettering crowns the image, while a slender crescent moon and a solitary figure standing below emphasize the extraordinary scale of the aircraft.
The restrained palette and carefully balanced composition give the poster its striking visual authority. Razzia combines the geometry and refinement of Art Deco with the clarity of modern advertising, transforming a familiar subject into an elegant and slightly dreamlike image.
Razzia is the professional name of Gérard Courbouleix-Dénériaz, a French artist born in Paris in 1950. After beginning his career in photography, he turned to poster design in the late 1970s. Working from original painted compositions, he developed a distinctive style associated with travel, fashion, automobiles and the world of luxury.
With its saturated color, imaginative subject and unmistakable neo–Art Deco character, Balloons is an especially decorative example of Razzia’s early poster work. It will appeal equally to collectors of aviation imagery, twentieth-century graphic design and original French advertising posters.
