Au carnaval de Nice 1949
Regular price €600,00This vibrant original poster created by E. Gaillard for the 1949 Carnaval de Nice perfectly captures the joy, elegance and festive spirit of one of Europe's most celebrated winter events.
Held from 17 February to 1 March 1949, the Nice Carnival marked the return of large-scale celebrations to the French Riviera after the hardships of the Second World War. The festivities symbolized optimism, renewal and the revival of tourism along the Côte d'Azur, making posters such as this powerful ambassadors for post-war France.
Gaillard's composition radiates energy and glamour. At its center stands a smiling young woman dressed for carnival festivities, holding a black mask while blowing into a brightly coloured party horn whose ribbons seem to explode across the image. Behind her emerge the traditional figures of carnival theatre and masquerade, including a cheerful clown whose oversized features evoke the spirit of celebration and spectacle.
The artist masterfully combines the visual vocabulary of travel posters with that of fashion illustration and commercial art of the late 1940s. The luminous complexion of the figure, the elegant costume and the dynamic composition reflect the optimism and sophistication associated with the Riviera during the period.
The palette is particularly striking. Deep blues contrast with brilliant reds, yellows and whites, while the scattered confetti creates movement throughout the composition and immerses the viewer in the atmosphere of the festivities.
The Carnaval de Nice, founded in the nineteenth century, rapidly became one of the world's leading carnivals alongside Venice and Rio de Janeiro. Its flower battles, illuminated parades and elaborate floats attracted visitors from across Europe and North America, contributing significantly to Nice's reputation as an international winter destination.
Posters promoting the carnival played an essential role in this success. Produced in relatively limited numbers for seasonal display, surviving examples are today highly sought after by collectors of French travel posters and Riviera memorabilia.
The image also reflects the evolution of poster design after the war, moving away from the more painterly approaches of the interwar years toward a brighter and more modern graphic language influenced by advertising, cinema and magazine illustration.
Works celebrating the Côte d'Azur occupy a special place in the history of French poster art, and carnival posters are among the most desirable examples thanks to their exuberant imagery and limited period of use.
Combining glamour, festivity and post-war optimism, this original Carnaval de Nice 1949 poster remains a wonderful celebration of the French Riviera's golden age and an exceptional example of mid-century French graphic design.
