Normandie SNCF - Avant la lettre 1958
Regular price €1.200,00This beautiful original 1958 poster by celebrated Franco-Japanese artist Tsugouharu Foujita was created for the SNCF to promote the timeless charm of the French region of Normandy. Issued as an avant la lettre version—without the final advertising text and typography—it allows the viewer to appreciate the artwork in its purest and most painterly form.
The composition depicts a peaceful Norman countryside scene bathed in the soft light of spring. A traditional half-timbered farmhouse with its characteristic steep roof stands quietly amidst blossoming trees and fresh green meadows, while a winding path leads the eye toward the horizon. The atmosphere is one of serenity, simplicity and rural elegance, perfectly capturing the spirit of Normandy that had fascinated artists for generations.
Foujita's unmistakable sensitivity is evident throughout the work. Rather than producing a conventional travel advertisement, he creates a poetic vision of the landscape through delicate brushwork and subtle tonal harmonies dominated by soft greens and pale greys. The result is a scene that feels intimate and contemplative, closer to a watercolor painting than a commercial poster.
Born in Tokyo in 1886, Tsugouharu Foujita settled in Paris in the 1910s and became one of the leading figures of the École de Paris alongside Modigliani, Soutine and Chagall. His unique ability to combine Japanese artistic traditions with Western painting techniques earned him international acclaim and made him one of the most distinctive artists working in France during the twentieth century.
During the 1950s, the SNCF commissioned many of France's greatest artists and illustrators to promote travel throughout the country, creating what is now considered one of the golden ages of railway poster design. Foujita's contribution stands apart for its remarkable lyricism and artistic refinement, elevating the travel poster to the level of fine art.
The designation avant la lettre is particularly important for collectors. These versions, printed before the addition of destination names, schedules or promotional text, were often produced in smaller numbers for approval purposes or presentation copies and are generally considered more desirable than the standard commercial editions.
Today, this original Normandie – Avant la Lettre poster remains one of the most elegant and poetic examples of post-war French travel advertising, combining the charm of rural Normandy with the unmistakable artistic vision of Tsugouharu Foujita.
