Designed by Pierre Couronne, this original 1954 advertising poster was printed by Affiches Gaillard in Paris for Jalla, the French manufacturer of high-quality terry towels and household linen. The prominent “Tissu garanti Boussac” label associates the product with Marcel Boussac’s celebrated textile group, one of the leading names in postwar French industry.
Couronne depicts a wet black-and-white spaniel wrapped in a generously proportioned golden-yellow towel. Its expressive eyes, dripping ears and playful grip on the fabric transform a simple household product into a humorous and affectionate scene. The image immediately conveys the softness, warmth and absorbency of the advertised towel.
The warm yellow textile stands out beautifully against the fresh turquoise-green background. Painterly white marks suggest splashing water and movement, while the bold burgundy Jalla lettering gives the design a strong commercial presence. Pierre Couronne (1928–2013) was a French illustrator whose work appeared in advertising and numerous children’s publications. His accessible style was particularly suited to expressive characters and animals, combining careful draughtsmanship with colour, humour and narrative charm. He produced several memorable designs for the Boussac textile group during the 1950s.
